| ECAAR lost a dear friend when Dorrie Weiss died Wednesday, 19 May 2004, after a prolonged struggle with lung cancer. She died peacefully in her own home, with the compassionate help of the staff of the Joseph Perlow Hospice, and in the presence of her children and their spouses.
A non-denominational funeral ceremony was held at 11 a.m. Sunday, 23 May 2004, at the Plaza Funeral Home, 630 Amsterdam Ave. (at 91st St.) in Manhattan. Dorrie asked that memorial contributions be made to ECAAR or to The NGO Committee on Disarmament, Inc.
ECAAR's founder, Robert Schwartz, wrote that "Dorrie was a dear friend and a supporter of what we tried to do together, a bright, most gracious caring person from whom we always received recognition and care beyond a best life friend. I join with you in thanks for her caring love and goodness. As you know, we share with you appreciation for her life and sorrow in her departure." Other Board members have expressed appreciation for her service as our UN Representative, for her gracious hospitality, and for her perceptive wit and sense of humor. ECAAR placed a small notice in the NY Times of Saturday, May 22nd, which read: Board member, UN Representative, and beloved friend. Her spirited and passionate work for peace will continue to inspire us. Our deepest condolences to Paul, Ellen and the countless others who mourn her. |
