EPS Sessions at the 2023 ASSA (full document)

The complete manuscript consists of the following chapters:

  1. Introduction to EPS. A history of EPS, its role at ASSA/AEA, and overview of the panels (download here)

  2. Session 1: Nature Counts: Accounting for the Environment in National Statistics. EPS Trustee Linda Bilmes moderates a discussion with Dr. Bert Kroese (IMF), Dr. Joseph Stiglitz (Colombia, EPS Trustee), Dr. Eli Fenichel (White House Office of Science & Technology), and Hon. Mauricio Rodas (Former Mayor Quito, Ecuador). The panelists focused on how to re-imagine and re-design economic statistics to account for the environment, including biodiversity and ecosystem services, and the mechanisms to produce such data and integrate it into public and private financial statistics at the local, national and global levels. (download here)

  3. Session 2: Inflation and Inequality. Dr. Allen Sinai (EPS Fellow and Board member, among the world’s leading economic forecasters) moderated a panel that included the Hon. LaToya Cantrell (Mayor of New Orleans), Dr. Jason Furman (Harvard , EPS Trustee), Dr. William Darity (Duke , EPS Fellow), and Dr. Joseph Stiglitz (Columbia, EPS Trustee). Mayor Cantrell described how inequality and infla- tion are affecting New Orleans, along with her enthusiasm for the upcoming Mardi Gras celebrations. Jason Furman presented a wealth of data charts as he discussed inflation, inequality and how these problems are connected. Professor William “Sandy” Darity, in a talk titled “Making America Great for the First Time”, presented his work on racial wealth disparities and inequality. Professor Joe Stiglitz examined the underlying drivers of inflation and critiqued some aspects of Furman’s presentation. All panelists then answered questions from the audience. (download here)

On behalf of EPS, we hope you find these materials enlightening and a contribution to academic, political, and public discourse.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the 2024 ASSA/AEA in San Antonio, Texas.

Respectfully,

David Colt & Prof. Linda Bilmes
